Tips for North Carolina Employees Returning to Work After Knee, Shoulder, or Back Injury

February 15 , 2024

At the Ramsay Law Firm, P.A., our Charlotte workers’ compensation attorneys know that returning to work after a knee, shoulder, or back injury can be intimidating. But with proper planning and support, North Carolina employees can make a smooth transition back to the workplace.

Here, we provide tips for transitioning from injury and recovery to returning to work.

Employees Returning

Communicate with Your Employer & Coworkers

Keep open lines of communication with your employer and healthcare provider throughout the recovery process. Inform your employer about any restrictions or accommodations your healthcare provider recommends and discuss a plan for your return to work.

Once you return, inform your coworkers about your injury and any required accommodations. Clear communication can help prevent misunderstandings and ensure that everyone knows how they can support your return to work.

Understand Your Limitations & Ease Back into Work

When returning to work, consider your physical limitations and capabilities and understand any restrictions or precautions your healthcare provider advises. Consider starting back at work gradually with reduced hours or modified duties, if possible. This can help prevent overexertion and allow you to slowly build up your stamina and strength.

Do not push yourself too hard too soon. Listen to your body and take breaks as needed.

Use Assistive Devices & Request Reasonable Accommodations

If your healthcare provider recommends, use assistive devices such as braces, crutches, or ergonomic tools to support your injured knee, shoulder, or back and reduce strain during work activities.

If you require accommodations to perform your job duties safely and effectively, do not hesitate to request them from your employer. This could include ergonomic adjustments, modified workstations, or assistance with heavy lifting tasks.

Practice Proper Body Mechanics & Take Regular Breaks

Use proper body mechanics and lifting techniques to avoid straining your injured knee, shoulder, or back. Bend at the knees when lifting, keep your back straight, and avoid twisting or jerking motions that could aggravate your injury. Prolonged sitting or standing can also exacerbate knee, shoulder, and back injuries, so try to change positions frequently and take regular breaks to rest and stretch your muscles throughout the day.

Outside of work, get plenty of rest, eat a balanced diet, stay hydrated, and engage in activities that promote relaxation and stress relief. Remember, everyone’s recovery journey is unique. Listening to your body and pacing yourself accordingly is essential to getting back on track.
