March 25 , 2025

Raleigh, North Carolina — March 24, 2025 — According to ABC11, authorities confirmed that two drivers lost their lives in an early morning wrong-way collision on Interstate 40 in Wake County.

The tragic accident occurred around 4:00 a.m. near mile marker 295, in the vicinity of Gorman Street. Investigators determined that one vehicle was traveling against traffic flow after mistakenly entering the highway’s eastbound lanes via the exit ramp. The wrong-way vehicle collided head-on with another car traveling eastbound.

Both drivers sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Following the incident, officials temporarily closed all eastbound lanes of I-40 to allow for investigation and cleanup. Traffic was impacted for several hours, but all lanes reopened by approximately 10:00 a.m.

Authorities are actively investigating whether impairment caused the accident, and further details are expected as the investigation continues.

Meanwhile, police also reported a separate fatal incident involving a pedestrian riding an e-scooter on Gorman Street shortly before the I-40 crash. Investigators have not confirmed whether there is a connection between the two incidents.
