Breaking News: Two Construction Workers Killed in Massive Fire in Charlotte, North Carolina

June 29 , 2023

Charlotte, North Carolina – May 18, 2023 – Two construction workers were killed in a massive fire that required over 90 firefighters to respond to a residential construction site on Liberty Road around 9 a.m. Within 10 minutes, the blaze grew to five alarms, according to the Charlotte Fire Department. The fire department’s investigation determined that the blaze began accidentally and started in a spray insulation foam trailer on the ground floor.

Construction Workers Killed

Reginald Johnson, the fire chief for the Charlotte Fire Department, told reporters the bodies of two construction workers unaccounted for in the five-alarm blaze on Liberty Row Drive were discovered in the wreckage.

While battling the flame, firefighters rescued 15 construction workers, including one person who was stuck on top of a crane. Johnson said firefighters had the crane operator assist in the rescue until he also needed to be rescued.

“It was a very fast-moving fire [with] high heat conditions well over 2000 degrees. And as a construction site is open, a lot of wood is exposed. The fire moved very rapidly,” Johnson said.

Johnson also confirmed that two “maydays” were issued after firefighters had issues getting out of the fire while rescuing some construction workers.
