Citation documents show the crash occurred at the intersection of Pogue Street and Clark Avenue in Raleigh, less than a mile from NC State. According to those records, 19-year-old Jack Thomas Etheridge was turning when he failed to yield, causing the impact that left Duque-Wilckens gravely injured. Etheridge received citations for failing to yield and misdemeanor death by vehicle, though records indicate he was not taken into custody. Officials have not said whether he has any affiliation with the university.

NC State released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss of Duque-Wilckens and noted that support services are being made available to those affected. The university identified her as a member of its Department of Biological Sciences. Her academic background included graduate degrees from the University of Chile and the University of California, Davis.

The length of her tenure at NC State has not been publicly confirmed.
