Breaking News: Interstate 85 Traffic Clears After Major Multi-Vehicle Collision in Gaston County

Gaston County, North Carolina — March 21, 2025—According to WCNC, drivers faced extensive delays after an eight-vehicle crash prolonged the southbound closure of Interstate 85.

The collision occurred shortly after 9:00 a.m. near Exit 23 at NC Highway 7 near McAdenville, resulting in heavy congestion stretching toward Charlotte. Emergency responders worked at the scene for nearly three hours, initially predicting lanes could remain closed into the late afternoon. However, crews cleared the wreckage earlier than anticipated, fully reopening the southbound lanes shortly after 11:30 a.m.

Four individuals sustained injuries and were transported to local hospitals by Gaston EMS. The accident involved various vehicle types, including several large tractor-trailers.

During the shutdown, drivers were advised to bypass the area using alternate routes such as U.S. 29 and U.S. 74 or re-entering I-85 further south via Main Street/McAdenville Road.

Multiple local and state agencies, including the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Belmont and Cramerton Police Departments, and firefighters from Belmont and Lowell, collaborated to manage the response and cleanup effort.
