Breaking News: Employee Killed in Anson County, North Carolina Plant Explosion

June 29 , 2023

ANSON COUNTY, N.C. — June 22, 2023 — Thursday evening, shortly after 9 p.m., an explosion occurred at the Darling Ingredients plant off Highway 52 in Anson County, north of Wadesboro. Darling Ingredients makes food for animals, and the blast was thought to involve an aluminum chloride solution that can react violently with water, although an investigation is still underway.

Employee Killed

The Anson County fire marshal arrived to find a plume of smoke from the building and waited for the Charlotte Fire Department to send its air quality monitoring equipment and hazmat crew to the scene.

As a result of the explosion, a small building collapsed, and neighbors reported they could hear and feel the sound and vibration of the explosion inside their homes.

Tragically, first responders recovered the employee’s body who died in a plant explosion.

This is not the first time Darling Ingredients has reported a plant explosion that resulted in fatalities. In 2020, the company faced a $75,000 fine after two workers died in an explosion in Mississippi, according to an OSHA inspection report.

Since the June 22nd explosion, Darling Ingredients has shut down the Anson County plant, and an investigation is underway. Both the Anson County Fire Department and OSHA will investigate.

Our sympathies are extended to the team members’ families, friends, and coworkers who died in the tragic 2020 and 2023 explosions. We want all men and women to come home safe from work.
