E-Bike Rider Killed in Collision With Pickup Truck on Highway 421 in Watauga County
September 9 , 2025Watauga County, North Carolina — September 8, 2025 — According to WBTV 3, a 39-year-old man died following a weekend crash in which his electric bicycle was struck by a pickup truck along Highway 421 near Vanderpool Road in the Vilas community.
Authorities said the collision happened shortly before 9 p.m. on Saturday, September 6. According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Joseph Clyde Butler was traveling south on his e-bike when a southbound Ford F-250 failed to slow down and hit him from behind.
The impact threw Butler from the bicycle, leaving him with critical injuries. He was flown to a hospital in Winston-Salem, where he passed away the following day. Troopers noted he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The 58-year-old man operating the pickup was not injured. Investigators said charges against the driver are still under review.
