Deadly Tanker Explosion at Mooresville Beverage Facility Under Investigation

April 9, 2026

Mooresville, North Carolina  — April 8, 2026 — According to the Charlotte Observer, a tanker explosion at a beverage production facility left one person dead and another seriously injured.

The blast occurred at a facility on Barley Park Lane. According to local fire officials, the explosion involved a tanker carrying sodium hydroxide, a chemical commonly used for industrial cleaning.

A female employee who was near the tanker at the time suffered chemical burns and injuries related to the blast. She was transported to a hospital in Charlotte for treatment. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the individual who died.

Fire officials described the explosion as significant, noting that the tanker was severely damaged. The rear portion of the tank reportedly separated during the blast, and a nearby nitrogen tank may have been compromised as a result.

Deadly Tanker Explosion

Emergency crews, including hazardous materials teams, worked for hours to contain and clean the affected area. Additional cleanup resources were brought in due to the scope of the contamination, which extended beyond the immediate blast site to surrounding equipment and parts of the facility.

Officials confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the public, but residents were advised to avoid the area while response efforts continued.

Federal Investigation Underway

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is expected to lead the investigation into the cause of the explosion. Representatives from the agency’s hazardous materials division were dispatched to the scene and began gathering information shortly after the incident.

At this stage, the exact cause of the explosion remains unknown.

Prior Safety Concerns

Public records indicate that the company operating the facility has been cited for safety violations in the past. Over the last decade, it has received multiple citations regarding chemical handling, machinery safety, and hazardous energy control.

In one recent case, federal regulators cited the company for failing to ensure proper use of protective equipment and for maintaining unsafe electrical conditions. The total fines associated with these violations approached $27,000.

Details surrounding some earlier violations remain limited, but they involved concerns related to worker safety and equipment operation at the Mooresville site.

Company representatives have not publicly commented on the incident.

As the investigation continues, officials are expected to release additional details regarding the cause of the explosion and the circumstances leading up to the incident.
