Breaking News: Crane Used in Dramatic Rescue of Injured Construction Worker in Charlotte
June 13 , 2025Charlotte, North Carolina — June 12, 2025 — According to WCCB Charlotte, emergency crews executed a high-angle rescue after a construction worker was injured on the sixth floor of a building under construction on Metropolitan Avenue.
The worker was hurt while performing duties several stories above ground at the active high-rise site. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene, where Charlotte Fire Department crews assessed the situation and determined that a crane already present on-site offered the safest way to bring the injured individual down.
Specialized teams, including Ladder 1, Rescue 11, Engine 11, and Engine 1, worked together to carry out the complex rescue. Firefighters carefully placed the worker into a Stokes basket, secured the individual for stability, and rigged the basket to the crane. A firefighter accompanied the basket during the descent to ensure the injured worker remained safe throughout the operation.
Charlotte Fire Chief Reginald Johnson praised the crews for their professionalism and teamwork. “This rescue highlights our firefighters’ courage and technical expertise,” he said. “Their quick thinking and precise execution turned a dangerous situation into a successful outcome. I’m proud of their commitment to protecting lives.”
The worker was safely lowered and transported for medical care. No further details on the extent of the injuries were immediately available.
