The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said the crash occurred along Highway 70 near Sundown Road, just outside Glen Alpine.
Investigators said a Ford F-150 traveling eastbound veered into oncoming traffic and struck a Kia Forte head-on. The impact forced the Kia into a nearby guardrail, causing it to overturn.
An 8-year-old girl riding in the backseat of the Kia died at the scene. A 30-year-old man in the vehicle was critically injured and was flown to a medical center by helicopter. The driver of the Ford, identified as 43-year-old Benjamin Jacob Willis, also sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance.
Authorities have not released the identity of the young victim, citing the ongoing investigation and notification of family members.
Preliminary findings indicate that impairment may have played a role in the crash. State troopers said charges against Willis are anticipated once the investigation progresses and his condition stabilizes.
The tragic incident underscores the dangers of impaired driving and has left a community grieving the loss of a child whose life was cut short far too soon.
