Wilkes County Deputy Seriously Injured in Head-On Collision With Suspected Impaired Driver

September 10 , 2025

Wilkes County, North Carolina — September 9, 2025 — According to WBTV 3, a Wilkes County deputy sheriff suffered serious injuries over the weekend after being struck head-on by a suspected impaired driver during a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 115.

The collision happened near Hunting Creek Road. Investigators with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol reported that a northbound Ford F-150 sideswiped a Ford F-250 towing a boat that was traveling south. Following that impact, the F-150 continued across the centerline and collided head-on with the deputy’s vehicle.

Head-On Collision With Suspected Impaired Driver

Troopers said the driver of the F-150, identified as 47-year-old Darrell Dean Kilby, was impaired and driving carelessly at the time of the wreck.

Both Kilby and the deputy were transported to local hospitals with injuries that were described as non-life-threatening, though officials said the deputy’s condition was serious. The driver of the F-250 was not injured.

Kilby now faces charges of driving while impaired and careless and reckless driving, with additional charges still under consideration.

In a statement, the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude for community support and asked for continued prayers for the deputy’s recovery.
