Breaking News: Tractor-Trailer Fails to Move Over Hitting Occupied NCHP and IMAP Vehicles Responding to Separate Accident

March 23 , 2024

HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. — March 21, 2024 – According to FoxCarolina.com, North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCHP) reported four people were injured following a Haywood County crash after a semi-truck failed to move over.

According to the NCHP, one of their troopers and a North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) Incident Management Assistance Patrol (IMAP) safety vehicle were responding to a separate crash on I-40 west near mile marker 20. At 10:57 p.m., a tractor-trailer ran off the right side of the road and hit the NCDOT IMAP vehicle. Next, officials said the tractor-trailer hit the NCHP patrol car, pushing it into two cars from the initial crash.

The Highway Patrol said four people were taken to the hospital, treated, and released. Charges for the tractor-trailer driver are pending.

State troopers want to remind North Carolina drivers of the move-over law, which requires them to slow down and change lanes when approaching emergency vehicles. When approaching a stopped authorized emergency vehicle, proceed with caution.
