Breaking News: Family Confirms Identity of Woman Fatally Struck in Lenoir County Hit-and-Run
August 23 , 2025Lenoir County, North Carolina — August 22, 2025 — According to WITN, a grieving family has come forward to identify the woman who lost her life in a hit-and-run incident earlier this month.
Although the North Carolina Highway Patrol has not yet made an official announcement, relatives say Valarie Potter was the victim of the deadly crash on August 5. According to a GoFundMe page created by her sister, the family received confirmation that Potter was the woman killed in the incident.
Investigators believe Potter was walking along Paul’s Path Road when she was struck by a pickup truck. Her body was not discovered until four days later, when two passersby came across the scene and contacted law enforcement.
Authorities eventually linked the crash to Steven Hawkins, after a trooper noticed his truck traveling on U.S. 70 with damage consistent with the collision. Hawkins was pulled over, and according to officials, he admitted to hitting Potter on Paul’s Path Road. He has been charged with felony hit-and-run resulting in serious injury or death.
The investigation remains ongoing as Potter’s family and community mourn the tragic loss.
