Breaking News: Crash on Interstate 85 Kills Two, Lexington Man Charged with Death by Motor Vehicle

Davidson County, North Carolina — May 2, 2024 — According to WGHP, a man is facing death by motor vehicle charges as the result of a crash that killed two people on I-85 South near US 64 in Davidson County, according to North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Investigators say that a 1997 Ford truck was towing a trailer while driving southbound on I-85 when a 2002 Ford pickup truck, also driving southbound on I-85, failed to reduce its speed and struck the trailer of the 1997 Ford in the rear.

Breaking News Crash on Interstate 85 Kills Two

The collision caused the 1997 Ford truck to go off the road to the left, overturn, and collide with a tree. The 2002 Ford pickup truck also went off the road to the left and struck a tree.

The driver of the 1997 Ford truck, Alan Wendell Sanderson, 68, of Mooresville, and a passenger, Mark Hughes, 61, of Mooresville, were both fatally wounded and died at the scene as a result of their injuries.

The driver of the 2002 Ford pickup truck, Jerry Dan Surratt II, 48, of Lexington, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Surratt is being charged with two counts of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, driving while license revoked, and failure to reduce speed.
