Breaking News: Charges Pending After Woman Was Killed In A Head-On Collision in Burke County, NC
May 26 , 2024Rhodhiss, North Carolina — May 24, 2024 — According to WCCB Charlotte, around 5 p.m. Friday, authorities said a 2016 Toyota Tacoma was traveling west on Rhodhiss Road while a 1997 Kia Sportage was traveling east.
The Toyota truck allegedly crossed the center line and hit the Kia vehicle head-on.
Lori Jean Ward, 42, operating the Kia, died at the scene. Officials said she was not wearing her seatbelt. The Toyota driver, 60-year-old Paul Hugh Severt Jr., sustained minor injuries and was transported to UNC Health Blue Ridge in Morganton.
Officials said speed and alcohol were not contributing factors in the crash. However, the North Carolina Highway Patrol said charges are pending after investigating and consulting with the Burke County District Attorney’s Office.
