Wrong-Way Crash and Vehicle Fire on I-40 in Greensboro Leaves One Dead
March 6, 2026Greensboro, North Carolina — March 19, 2026 — According to My Fox 8 and the Greensboro Police Department, a serious wrong-way crash on Interstate 40 West resulted in one fatality and left two others injured.
Emergency crews responded near Exit 208 at Sandy Ridge Road following reports of a crash involving severe injuries. When first responders arrived, they encountered a large fire near the median, with multiple vehicles involved.
Investigators say a Honda CR-V was traveling the wrong direction at a high rate of speed after entering the interstate from the Sandy Ridge Road ramp. The vehicle collided with two other cars, and the impact set at least two of the vehicles on fire.
The driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene. The other two drivers were transported to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased.
The crash led to significant traffic disruptions, with westbound lanes of I-40 closed at NC 68 and partial closures affecting eastbound traffic as crews worked to extinguish the fire and clear the scene.
A witness traveling on I-40 East described seeing a vehicle moving at high speed in the wrong direction before the collision, followed by a large explosion and fire. The incident is being investigated by the Greensboro Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit.
