Driver Charged With Murder Following Crash That Killed Forsyth County Sheriff’s Deputy
March 10, 2026Winston Salem, North Carolina — March 9, 2026 — According to WXII 12, a man is facing multiple criminal charges after a crash that claimed the life of a Forsyth County Sheriff’s deputy earlier this month.
North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper Whit Efird said Bryan Castillo has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the incident. He also faces additional charges, including reckless driving, speeding, and driving left of center.
Court documents indicate Castillo was traveling approximately 100 miles per hour in a zone where the speed limit was 55 miles per hour. Officials said the charges were initially filed as misdemeanor death by vehicle but were later upgraded to second-degree murder following further investigation. Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O’Neill confirmed the change.
The crash occurred in the 7400 block of Highway 311 near the intersection with Grubbs Road.
Authorities identified the victim as Forsyth County Sheriff’s Deputy Kaleb Mitchell. The sheriff’s office said Mitchell died while performing his duties in service to the community.
Community members and first responders have expressed their grief over the loss. Walnut Cove Fire Chief Brian Booe described Mitchell as a dedicated public servant who was respected by those who worked alongside him.
Mitchell previously served with the King Police Department before joining the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office. Officials said he was sworn in with the King Police Department on Feb. 24, 2022.
The sheriff’s office has since established a memorial honoring Mitchell’s life and service.
Sheriff Bobby F. Kimbrough Jr. also paid tribute to the deputy, emphasizing the commitment law enforcement officers make to protect their communities.
Castillo is currently being held without bond. His next scheduled court appearance is set for March 19.
