North Carolina Trucker Killed After Rig Goes Off Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, Family Remembers His Generosity
February 17, 2026Cape Charles, Virginia — February 16, 2026 — According to 13 News Now, a North Carolina truck driver who lost his life after his tractor-trailer went off the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is being remembered by loved ones as a man who always put others first.
Authorities identified the driver as 61-year-old Ronnie Andrews of Robersonville, North Carolina. According to officials with the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, the crash occurred on the southbound span of the structure.
Investigators reported that Andrews was operating a Perdue tractor-trailer when the vehicle struck the west-side guardrail and went over the edge, falling into the water below. A statement from Perdue confirmed that Andrews was pronounced dead at the scene.
His wife, Lovie Andrews, spoke about her husband’s character, describing him as someone who deeply valued family, friendships, and community. Although she chose not to appear on camera, she shared that he was known for his kindness and willingness to help anyone in need.
She said her husband consistently went out of his way to support others, and that his compassion defined how he lived. She added that his loss has left an overwhelming void for their family and those who knew him.
Multiple agencies responded to assist with recovery efforts, including the U.S. Coast Guard, the Virginia Beach Marine Rescue Team, and Crofton Diving of Portsmouth. According to Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel officials, Crofton Diving recovered both Andrews’ body and the tractor-trailer from the water.
Fellow truck driver Isaiah Little emphasized the importance of mental focus when navigating demanding roadways, such as the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. He emphasized the need for defensive driving, minimizing distractions, and anticipating other motorists’ actions to remain safe.
Officials stated that the cause of the crash remains under investigation. However, authorities have ruled out weather conditions as a contributing factor.
The southbound lanes of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel are operating with a single lane near the crash site as crews continue repairs to the damaged guardrail and curb.
