Gaston County Paramedic Killed While Assisting Crash Victim on I-95 in Florida
November 18, 2025Brevard County, Florida — November 17, 2025 — According to WBTV 3, a Gaston County paramedic who stopped to help an injured driver along Interstate 95 has died from injuries she sustained during the rescue attempt, according to officials.
Mary Jolly, 27, passed away two days after she was critically hurt while providing aid at a crash scene. Authorities say Jolly pulled over after witnessing a driver who had been struck by another vehicle. While she was rendering medical assistance, a separate vehicle hit her, causing life-threatening injuries.
Jolly was transported to a Florida hospital, where she remained in critical condition before succumbing to her injuries. Reports indicate that the family surrounded her at the time of her passing. The current condition of the driver she initially stopped to assist has not been released.
Jolly had been a member of Gaston County Emergency Medical Services since 2021 and served on the agency’s swift water rescue team. Her colleagues described her as a devoted paramedic whose compassion and calm leadership made a lasting impact.
“Mary embodied everything we value in EMS—her empathy, strength, and unwavering service to others left a mark on everyone who worked alongside her,” said Deputy Chief Jamie McConnell. “Her loss is one our entire department feels deeply.”
Deputy County Manager Vincent Wong echoed those sentiments, noting that Jolly’s dedication and courage set a standard for others to follow. In 2023, she was honored as the B-Shift Outstanding Paramedic, a recognition of her exceptional commitment to the community.
Gaston County officials say they are supporting Jolly’s coworkers and family as they grieve the sudden loss of a colleague who, in their words, “touched countless lives.”
