Woman Dies and Sister Injured in Early-Morning Crash on I-40 in Durham County
October 20, 2025Durham, North Carolina — October 19, 2025 — According to authorities and ABC 11, an early morning crash on Interstate 40 westbound claimed the life of one woman and injured her sister after their vehicle was struck while stopped along the roadway.
The collision happened near Page Road in Durham County. Investigators said Brijette Basden, 24, of Kernersville, had pulled her Ford Fusion onto the left shoulder of I-40 to switch seats with her sister, Asrael Basden, when tragedy struck.
While both women stood outside the vehicle, which was partially in the travel lane, a Toyota Camry traveling westbound hit them and the stopped car, according to Durham police. A second Camry in the far-left lane then collided with the Ford, veered right, and was hit again by another vehicle in an adjacent lane.
Brijette Basden was pronounced dead at the scene. Her sister, Asrael Basden, was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said. No other drivers or passengers were hurt in the multi-vehicle crash.
Authorities closed all westbound lanes of I-40 for several hours as investigators reconstructed the scene and cleared debris.
Police have not announced any charges. The investigation remains active, and anyone with information is urged to contact Investigator G. Munter at (919) 560-4935, extension 29448, or reach Durham CrimeStoppers at (919) 683-1200.
