North Carolina Troopers Investigating Fatal Statesville Motorcycle Collision Involving Teen Driver
May 3, 2026Iredell County, North Carolina — May 2, 2026 — According to WBTV, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate a deadly motorcycle crash that occurred in the Statesville area and may result in criminal charges against a teenage driver.
Investigators said the collision happened along Whites Farm Road. Troopers said a 17-year-old driving an SUV southbound crossed into the northbound lane, where the vehicle collided with an oncoming motorcycle.
Authorities identified the motorcycle rider as 57-year-old Michael Gandy. He suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the crash scene.
The teenage driver was not hurt, officials said.
Investigators believe speed may have contributed to the collision, though authorities have not released an estimated speed for either vehicle. The posted speed limit on that section of roadway is reportedly 45 mph.
Following discussions with the Iredell County District Attorney’s Office, state troopers confirmed that charges against the teenage driver are anticipated. Officials have not yet announced what charges may be filed or whether the case will proceed in juvenile or adult court.
