Breaking News: Fatal North Carolina Ambulance Crash: 92-Year-Old Patient Thrown from Gurney During Impact
May 24 , 2025Winston-Salem, North Carolina — May 23, 2025 — According to the Journal of Emergency Medical Services, a tragic crash has claimed the life of 92-year-old Omer Pope, who was being transported to the hospital at the time of the collision.
The North Carolina medical examiner stated Pope was securely strapped to a gurney but was thrown from it during the crash, suffering fatal head trauma.
The incident occurred on the 6600 block of Silas Creek Parkway. Authorities say a Jeep Cherokee, driven by 52-year-old Diane Langford, veered across the center median and struck the ambulance head-on. Despite efforts to treat Pope immediately, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The official cause of death was listed as blunt force trauma to the head. The crash report confirmed that the violent impact dislodged Pope from the gurney, contributing directly to the fatal injuries.
Winston-Salem Police have charged Langford with misdemeanor death by vehicle and failure to maintain lane control. The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
