Community Honors Fallen Columbus County Deputy During Procession Home
June 17, 2026Columbus County, North Carolina — June 16, 2026 — According to WECT, family members, friends, fellow law enforcement officers, and community members gathered to honor a Columbus County Sheriff’s Office deputy who was killed in the line of duty as his body was escorted home following a fatal highway collision.

The deputy died after a tractor-trailer struck his patrol vehicle while he was assisting with traffic control for a road maintenance operation on U.S. Highway 74. Authorities have stated that the patrol vehicle was positioned with emergency lights activated to help protect road crews when the collision occurred.
A multi-agency law enforcement procession accompanied the deputy from Raleigh to Columbus County, with officers from both North Carolina and South Carolina participating. Residents lined portions of the route to pay their respects as the procession made its way to a local funeral home.
Friends and colleagues remembered the deputy as a devoted husband, father, and public servant who cared deeply about both his family and the community he served. Those who knew him described him as someone who loved his work and was committed to helping others.
Funeral services were scheduled to be held at South Columbus High School, where family, friends, fellow officers, and community members planned to gather in remembrance.
A memorial fund has also been established to assist the deputy’s family as they cope with the loss. Meanwhile, the investigation into the fatal collision remains ongoing as authorities continue to examine the circumstances.
