June 27, 2026Columbus County, North Carolina — June 26, 2026 — According to WBTV, a Columbus County Sheriff’s Office deputy was killed after a tractor-trailer struck his patrol vehicle while he was assisting with a roadway work zone.
Officials stated the collision occurred along U.S. Highway 74 near the Hallsboro Road exit. Authorities say the deputy was parked with his emergency lights activated to protect a road striping crew when a tractor-trailer crashed into the rear of his patrol vehicle.

The deputy was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
The sheriff described the fallen deputy as a dedicated member of the department who had served for approximately eight years and was well known in the community through his work as a school resource officer. Colleagues and community members have remembered him for his positive attitude, commitment to local students, and service to the county.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the crash. Officials are reminding motorists to remain alert, particularly when approaching emergency vehicles and highway work zones.
The driver of the tractor-trailer has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle, reckless driving to endanger, and failure to reduce speed. Those charges are allegations, and the case will proceed through the judicial process.
Community members have also organized efforts to support the deputy’s surviving family as they mourn his loss.
