Breaking News: Burke County Deputy Dies in Crash Involving FedEx Truck in Morganton
May 4 , 2025Burke County, North Carolina — May 3, 2025 — According to WXII 12, an off-duty deputy from the Burke County Sheriff’s Office lost his life following a collision involving a FedEx delivery truck in Morganton, North Carolina.
The incident occurred on May 1 along NC Highway 181 at the intersection with Bowman Avenue. According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the FedEx truck attempted to turn onto the highway when it struck a vehicle driven by Rex Ivy Powell. Investigators say Powell was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from his vehicle during the crash.
Powell died from his injuries at the scene. The driver of the delivery truck, identified as Talmadge James Belcher, sustained minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. He has since been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to yield the right of way.
Powell was a well-known Burke County law enforcement community member, having served as a deputy for many years. At the time of the crash, he was working as a school resource officer at a local elementary school, where he was respected by students and staff alike.
The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
