Breaking News: Beloved Rock Hill Baseball Coach Killed in Crash While Driving to Game in Sumter
August 12 , 2024Kershaw County, South Carolina — August 10, 2024 — According to Queen City News, the Rock Hill community is mourning the loss of a beloved baseball coach who tragically died while on his way to a game in Sumter.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol reported the deadly accident happened along I-20, about seven miles west of the City of Camden.
Troopers said three vehicles were involved in the wreck: a 2011 Buick sedan, a 2006 Ford pickup, and a 2024 Freightliner tractor-trailer traveling east on I-20. Reports stated the first two vehicles, the Buick and Ford, stopped for traffic ahead. The tractor-trailer driver did not stop and struck the Ford pickup in the rear. The Ford pickup then propelled ahead, striking the back of the Buick sedan.
The Buick and Ford vehicles went off the right side of the road, overturning the Ford. The Ford pickup, identified as Jalen Benjamin, “J-Rock,” 29, was on his way to watch his boys play baseball in Sumter and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Two people inside the Buick were transported to the hospital for treatment of their injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured in the multi-vehicle crash.
This deadly accident remains under investigation by SC Highway Patrol.
