76-Year-Old Woman Dies After Being Struck by SUV During Morning Walk in Cary

August 28, 2026

Cary, North Carolina — August 27, 2026 — According to ABC 11, a 76-year-old woman was killed after being struck by a vehicle while taking her regular walk.

According to Cary police, Soile Lazarz was walking along Ederlee Drive near Regency Parkway when the driver of a black SUV struck her.

Her husband, Thomas Lazarz, said his wife typically walked about three miles each day. He often joined her, but on that day, she went out alone. When she didn’t return for nearly two hours, he began to worry. A police officer arrived at the couple’s home with news that she had been struck.

Thomas described his wife as an exceptionally cautious pedestrian who paid close attention to traffic and crossings. Although police have not said what led to the collision or whether speed played a role, he said he was concerned about vehicles traveling too quickly through the area and urged motorists to obey posted speed limits and stay alert around pedestrian crossings.

The couple met while attending college in Sweden and went on to build a life together, including a daughter and granddaughter. Thomas remembered his wife as someone who helped keep him grounded and who cared deeply about fairness and equal opportunities for others.

He also compared her warm, spirited personality to that of country music icon Dolly Parton, affectionately describing Soile as his own version of the singer.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision. Police said they have filed no charges against the driver.
